The table grape vineyard provides an excellent educational opportunity to students who are interested in all phases of table grape production, from planting to harvesting and marketing. It offers the student the experimental approach necessary to complement classroom instruction. This is accomplished through the "Project Program" and "Laboratory Exercises and Demonstrations". Areas of laboratory instructions include: Pruning and training of young and mature vines, crop estimate, irrigation, pest management, cultivation, fertilization, propagation and special cultural practices which are unique to table grape production (i.e. thinning, suckering, girding, leaf removal, use of various growth regulators), and the safe handling and operations of various tools and equipment on the farm. Marketing through the Fresno State Farm Market and other outlets provide additional experience in direct marketing of table grapes. Therefore, the primary goal is to continue to develop and maintain the vineyard in a way that would offer the student the best educational facility in viticulture and related disciplines (e.g., irrigation, pest management, etc.) The table grape vineyard provides undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research under faculty supervision on problems related to table grape production and management. This not only provides research experience for CAST students and faculty, but also provides answers to production problems to the table grape growers of California. To achieve these goals, we continue to modernize the table grape vineyard by planting new varieties, using new technology and keeping up with new developments in the table grape industry. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
