ORGANIZERS

The International Wine Microbiology Symposium is being presented by the California State University, Fresno Viticulture and Enology Research Center and Department of Viticulture and Enology, with support from several industry sponsors.  The program will feature international and national experts from four continents of the world.   Members of the wine industry - including winemakers and laboratory personnel - will not want to miss this event!

The organizing committee is comprised of: Dr. Roy Thornton, Dr. Susan Rodriguez, Professor Ken Fugelsang, and Cynthia Wood of the Department of Viticulture and Enology and Viticulture and Enology Research Center at Fresno State.

In July 2000, Fresno State became the first university in the CSU system to combine its academic and research programs in viticulture and enology.  Our program is known for its practical, hands-on training and its unique facilities which include 160 acres of vineyards and a licensed, bonded winery - the first of its kind in the United States of America.

About the Organizers

Dr. Roy Thornton is a professor of enology in the Department of Viticulture and Enology.  He received his Ph.D. in Applied Microbiology from Strathclyde University, Scotland in 1970.  He taught at Massey University in New Zealand for 20 years and then at Indiana University in Kokomo, Indiana for three years before joining the E & J Gallo Winery as a Senior Research Microbiologist for five years.  His research focus is on wine microbiology with emphasis on wine yeast genetics and physiology and on the breeding of wine yeast by selective hybridization for improved winemaking properties. He also focuses on the manipulation of wine flavor by the use of different wine yeasts, on the interaction of wine yeasts and bacteria and on the real time monitoring of fermentation by flow cytometry.  He has additional interests in brewing and fuel ethanol production.

Dr. Susan Rodriguez is a research fellow for the Viticulture and Enology Research Center. She has been involved in wine microbiology since 1981 when she received a Ph.D. in Microbiology from UC Davis.  She has worked at Heublein Wines (now Constellation), E & J Gallo Winery, and a New Zealand government Crown Research Institute.  Recently she has become intrigued with sensory aspects of wine.  She started teaching the advanced sensory class in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at Fresno State when she arrived in 2002.  She designed and operates a state-of-the-art Sensory Laboratory. The sensory properties of wines and grape products from research projects and external clients are evaluated on a regular basis.  As a research fellow in the department and research center, she has been instrumental in developing the use of flow cytometry to monitor and analyze yeast and bacteria in wine using fluorescently labeled antibodies.

Professor Kenneth C. Fugelsang received his master in Zoology and Botany from California State University, Fresno in 1972 and is the current winemaster and an associate professor for the department.  Ken has authored and co-authored over ninety technical papers and seven books in the area of wine stability and microbiology, including Wine Analysis and Production and Wine Microbiology.  His areas of expertise are in wine stability and microbiology. In 1990 he was awarded the Claude Laval Research Award for Innovative Technology and was also honored by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology as the Salgo-Noren recipient for excellence in teaching and advising.  He recently was named one of Fresno State's "Top Dogs" by the California State University, Fresno Alumni Association.  Ken is a member of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture, American Society for Microbiology, and the Society for Industry Microbiology.

Cynthia Wood, Information Services Coordinator at the Viticulture and Enology Research Center and Department of Viticulture and Enology, is responsible for coordinating educational, outreach, and fundraising events for the viticulture and enology research and academic programs. These activities are designed to introduce transfer students and attract potential industry professionals to the viticulture and enology programs and services offered by this institution. Cynthia is a graduate of California State University, Fresno and has served the viticulture and enology programs at this institution since 1981.
